Database Performance Tradeoffs Masterclass
November 18, 2026 - 8:00am-10:30am PDT | 16:00-18:30 GMT
Free Masterclass: How to optimize for your workload without breaking at scale
When milliseconds matter, you could tinker with all sorts of variables related to infrastructure, data model, topology, and configurations on both the client and server side. But what boosts database performance for one use case/workload often degrades it for another. There is no universal “right answer.”
In this free 2-hour masterclass, you’ll learn how to navigate critical tradeoffs that impact database performance at scale.
We'll begin by looking at what levers you can pull regarding the database itself. Next, we’ll shift to the client side and examine decision points related to driver usage, networking, etc. At the end, both speakers pair up to explore a few real scenarios – analyzing what decision led to each performance problem and debating the pros and cons of alternative approaches.
You will learn how to:
- Evaluate the opportunities and risks associated with various database options
- Make the best tradeoffs for your workload characteristics (read/write mix, traffic volatility, etc)
- Anticipate what design decisions could come back to bite you at scale
- Identify when common approaches go wrong – and discover often-overlooked techniques that yield nice performance payoffs in the right scenarios

08:35AM – 9:05AM PT
Session 1: Server Side Tradeoffs
No single architecture maximizes speed, cost, and reliability at the same time. We begin by looking at how specific infrastructure considerations shape database performance, and then how the database itself forces further tradeoffs.
– Infrastructure, topology, and data replication considerations
– Data modeling for performance, and how database knobs may help (or undermine) tail latency
– Consistency and availability tradeoffs (and when to stop worrying about them!)
9:05AM – 9:35AM PT
Session 2: Client Side Tradeoffs
Client configuration is an often overlooked – but critical – factor for keeping database latency low. We'll cover critical best practices and tradeoffs, particularly those that cause bottlenecks at scale.
– Client drivers and settings that work in conjunction with the database, not against it
– Tuning configurations for high availability, consistency, and performance
– Other trade-off considerations: compaction, compression, networking
9:35AM – 10:00AM PT
Session 3: How Tradeoffs Play Out in Real Scenarios
Together, Felipe and Guilherme walk through real scenarios that show the tradeoffs in action. They spot performance issues in monitoring, analyze what underlying decision(s) led to each problem, and debate the pros and cons of alternative approaches.
– Identify performance bottlenecks and discuss how to prevent them
– Real-world examples of different choices and their impact on system performance
– Quantifying the impact of tradeoffs like high availability and performance
